What makes "Univers" unique? What is the Univers grid?

As mentioned in my previous post, Univers is a typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957 that quickly gained international popularity and is used very commonly to this day.  Univers belongs to a group of "neo-grotesque sans-serif typefaces" and is prominently show the famously well-known Swiss Style of graphic design.

Unlike other popular fonts of its time and style, Univers contains both character and functionality.  Univers was designed with a full range of widths, and was the first typeface to have those widths classified with a numerical system.  Univers has both heavy and light weights, giving it flexibility and readability in many different applications.

Univers has been seen in a variety of applications since its birth.  Some of the most notable instances include its use for Apple keyboards, the Frankfurt International Airport, Montreal Metro System, and many standardized test and exams due to its needed and helpful distinction between the letter "I" and the number "1".

At this time, Univers belongs to an extensive type family of 44 various faces.

The Univers grid is a graphic created to display 21 of the main faces of the Univers font family.
